Overview

The Person of Jesus Leader's Manual

The Person of Jesus offers an in-depth look at love by focusing on the one truly good man, Jesus of Nazareth. As people see His life unfold, their eyes open to a rich encounter with God’s love. And they discover a renewed ability to open their hearts to others. “Seeing the true nature of love so perfectly in Jesus is valuable beyond words” is how one participant described his experience.

Many Christians are so aware of Jesus’ divinity that they have forgotten He’s also a man. They love Him but know little about what He’s like as a person. The Person of Jesus shares with them the warmth of the only perfectly loving human being, and rekindles their first joy in knowing Jesus. Another participant couldn’t hide his enthusiasm: “Shocking! I have never thought of Jesus in this way . . . as a person. Wow!”

The Person of Jesus is also a non-threatening way to share the gospel with people who have little contact with the church. It gently introduces Christ and the incomparable beauty of His love. The study’s interactive method allows participants to discover Jesus on their own without being told what to believe.

Instead of using logic to convince someone to become a believer, The Person of Jesus draws people into the compassionate story of the most caring person who ever lived.

One man who became a Christian through a Person of Jesus study noted, “I just can’t get this stuff [about Jesus] out of my mind!” And a one-time Muslim woman sums it up: “I now have Jesus in my heart.”

The Person of Jesus Leader's Manual consists of 48 inductive lesson plans divided amongst five units: compassion, honesty, dependence on God, faith, and the journey through death into life. Each unit takes the participant deeper into an understanding of who Jesus is and involves progressive insights regarding the topic of love. As an interactive study, the heart of every lesson is a series of stimulating questions to draw the participants into the text of Scripture. It's perfect for discipleship and evangelism.

Compassion

When Jesus is confronted with suffering, he looks, feels compassion, and then acts. This pattern is not only in Jesus' life but also in his teaching, and it is featured in numerous Gospel stories, and even follows the pattern of Jesus' incarnation.

Honesty

Jesus' honesty provides depth to his compassion. Jesus shows us that without truth, our relationships lack definition and meaning. The gift of compassion must be accompanied by the gift of truth.

Good anger and the problem of reconciliation are also addressed in this unit.

Dependence on God

This unit introduces us to the aspect of Jesus' love that underlies all of his compassion and honesty – his dependence on his heavenly Father. Jesus' dependence on his Father is rooted in a careful study of Scripture and a life of prayer.

Faith

Closely associated with Jesus' dependence on his heavenly Father is Jesus' faith in him. Faith in God provides the energy for love. The closing lessons to this unit clarify the goal of love, which is oneness. Jesus' relationship with his Father is a perfect model for oneness.

The Passion

Love is a journey downward through the valley of humility. We trace Jesus' own downward journey to the cross as he teaches his reluctant disciples the importance of humility. When love is difficult, it is usually because it is so humbling. In the low place, we learn to see clearly, because God lives there.

The center of every act of love is a substitution or an exchange of my life for yours. The cross is the paradigm for this. Death is at the center of love.
