A quick look at the School of Prayer

School of Prayer

The School of Prayer is a prayer and teaching event spanning two days and nights in a retreat setting. Under the leadership of Paul Miller and Bob Allums, attendees will get to build on what they know, and go deeper in application. It expands on the A Praying Life seminar material and devotes more time to prayer than is afforded in the traditional seminar.

As we teach in both the A Praying Life seminar and in the book A Praying Life, prayer cannot be confined into a category of the Christian life. It is a key way we do life as Christians. It is deeply personal because it involves asking God to engage in the details of our lives. Prayer must be put into practice and not just thought about as an abstract idea.

It is much like learning how to drive a car. You study and memorize your state's Driver's Manual in preparation for the written exam - very important part of learning how to drive. But until you learn how to steer the car, what the pedals feel like, or how to make judgment calls about turns and traffic lights - you cannot claim to know how to drive.

The same is true of prayer. Listening to the best sermon series on prayer is a great start, but to learn to enjoy your Father's presence, leadership and story development in your life, it has to be applied. PrayerLife seminars aim to lay out the groundwork (the driving manual) while getting people started on the road to living through prayer (driver's ed). The School of Prayer goes deeper in both the training and the experience of prayer, similar to one-on-one driving lessons. For that reason, the School of Prayer is for those who have read A Praying Life or who have attended a PrayerLife Seminar but want to go deeper.

The School of Prayer will cover topics such as:

  • How to see life's prayer stories come together.
  • How to journal prayer stories.
  • Understanding the role of different types of prayers such as the Lament.
  • How to spend a day in prayer.

Prerequisite: Read A Praying Life or attended a PrayerLife Seminar.
